Where can lice appear on an adult? - briefly

Adult humans most often carry head lice on the scalp, but body lice live in clothing seams and lay eggs on body hair, and pubic lice infest the genital region; occasional infestations may also involve eyebrows, eyelashes, and facial hair. These locations correspond to areas where hair is present and the environment supports the insects’ life cycle.

Where can lice appear on an adult? - in detail

Lice infestations on mature humans are confined to areas where hair or dense fur provides a habitat for the insects. The three principal species each favor distinct regions:

  • Head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) – colonize scalp hair, often near the crown, behind the ears, and at the nape of the neck. They may also inhabit eyebrows and eyelashes, especially when hair is long or dense.
  • Body lice (Pediculus humanus corporis) – reside in the seams of clothing and lay eggs on the fabric. When the host’s clothing is in prolonged contact with the skin, the insects can move to the lower abdomen, groin, and thighs, feeding through the skin surface.
  • Pubic lice (Pthirus pubis) – attach to coarse hair in the genital area, including the pubic region, perianal zone, and occasionally the chest, abdomen, and facial hair such as beard or mustache when those areas are sufficiently thick.

Additional sites where lice may be encountered include:

  • Facial hair – beards, mustaches, and sideburns provide a suitable environment for head lice and, less commonly, pubic lice.
  • Armpits and chest hair – dense hair can support head lice, especially in individuals with abundant body hair.
  • Nasal hairhead lice may occasionally be found among nasal hairs, though this is rare.

Infestation patterns depend on hair density, personal hygiene, and the presence of suitable clothing. Detection requires careful inspection of each listed region, looking for live insects, nits attached to hair shafts, or signs of irritation.
